Genuine SURE FOOT Firm Slant Pads are color-coded with yellow on one side and charcoal on the other. They are made of the same material as the Firm Pad but cut on an angle. It is recommended that you use the Slants colored side up for greater stability.
Firm Slants will “give” more under the horse’s weight than Hard Slants. This is beneficial to many horses because the Firm Slants also yield laterally (side-to-side), similar to Firm Pads, depending on where the hoof is along the slant thickness.
Although horses seem to prefer Firm Slants positioned heel-high, they can be used in any direction – heel-high, heel-low, or side-high (i.e. laterally) – and under any hooves, front or hind.
Firm Slants are ideal for:
- Horses that are comfortable with the concept of SURE FOOT Pads
- Confident, well-balanced horses ready to progress to a more challenging surface
- Encouraging horses to engage their core muscles to help improve overall stability
- Providing comfort to horses with laminitis, arthritis, stringhalt, stifle, or hoof issues, or those rehabilitating from shoulder or pelvic injury
Firm Slants can be combined with other Pads to stack two or, in some instances, even three Pads high. Typically, the Firm Slant is used as the top layer. Stacking allows the person to offer the horse an experience that matches the different habit patterns of the body. Do not force a horse to stand on stacked Pads. Be aware that stacked Pads may slip as the horse steps off or the Pads may slide. This may cause additional wear and tear on the Pads. However, stacking is worthwhile because it allows the horse to experience a difference in limb length, which can be especially helpful in establishing more normal, balanced posture and movement.

Using Your Pads
Please familiarize yourself with the SURE FOOT Equine Stability Program® before using SURE FOOT Pads. We highly recommend watching the Quick Start Guide prior to offering Pads to your horse for the first time. Also check out the illustrated SURE FOOT Equine Stability Program Workbook which can be taken to the barn!
- Use caution when first offering - make sure your horse is comfortable with them.
- Start by having your horse in an open space, like an enclosed arena.
- Keep your horse on a lead rope when using Pads, rather than cross ties.
- Position the Pads with your foot - keep hands away from hooves.
- Allow your horse to walk off the Pads if he needs to move.
- Never leave your horse unattended while using the Pads.
Always check with your veterinarian before using the Pads for any specific conditions or unsoundness.
Note: SURE FOOT Equine Balance Pads are a tool to benefit your horse. Though durable, just like your other equipment they will show wear and tear over time. Nicks, tears, and cuts are considered normal and do not alter the effect of the Pads in any way.
Caring For Your Pads
Before using your SURE FOOT Pads for the first time, rub a small amount of dirt or footing on the colored surface. This will prevent them from sticking together or from sticking to the horse’s hoof during the initial use.
If needed, Pads can be cleaned with a sponge and warm water.
Store your SURE FOOT Pads where rodents can't get to them. When not using the Pads, please don't leave them:
- In a closed vehicle (like a car or trailer)
- Exposed to excessive heat
- Out in prolonged sunlight
Simply - if you wouldn’t leave your dog there, don’t leave your Pads there.
