Genuine SURE FOOT Hard Pads are color-coded with orange on one side and ivory on the other. Either side can be used.
Hard Pads are designed to provide a supportive surface that yields to heat and pressure with no lateral (side-to-side) movement. They are intended to allow horses to focus on their proprioception and body awareness. As horses become more attuned to their balance and weight distribution, they become more relaxed and confident. The Hard Pad's combination of stability and responsiveness makes it an excellent choice for horses that are new to SURE FOOT.
The Hard Pad is ideal for:
- Introducing horses to SURE FOOT
- Horses with a previous illness, injury, or physical challenge
- Building a horse's confidence and sense of security in his own balance
- Letting horses explore their balance without too much side-to-side movement
- Use with larger, heavier horses and breeds
- Nervous, anxious, or tense horses
The dense material of the Hard Pad gradually yields to the horse's hoof, providing a customized level of support and comfort while allowing horses to sense changes in their balance and stability. As the Pad yields, the horses sink into it, finding a comfortable “level” without the distraction of lateral instability.

Using Your Pads
Please familiarize yourself with the SURE FOOT Equine Stability Program® before using SURE FOOT Pads. We highly recommend watching the Quick Start Guide prior to offering Pads to your horse for the first time. Also check out the illustrated SURE FOOT Equine Stability Program Workbook which can be taken to the barn!
- Use caution when first offering - make sure your horse is comfortable with them.
- Start by having your horse in an open space, like an enclosed arena.
- Keep your horse on a lead rope when using Pads, rather than cross ties.
- Position the Pads with your foot - keep hands away from hooves.
- Allow your horse to walk off the Pads if he needs to move.
- Never leave your horse unattended while using the Pads.
Always check with your veterinarian before using the Pads for any specific conditions or unsoundness.
Note: SURE FOOT Equine Balance Pads are a tool to benefit your horse. Though durable, just like your other equipment they will show wear and tear over time. Nicks, tears, and cuts are considered normal and do not alter the effect of the Pads in any way.
Caring For Your Pads
Before using your SURE FOOT Pads for the first time, rub a small amount of dirt or footing on the colored surface. This will prevent them from sticking together or from sticking to the horse’s hoof during the initial use.
If needed, Pads can be cleaned with a sponge and warm water.
Store your SURE FOOT Pads where rodents can't get to them. When not using the Pads, please don't leave them:
- In a closed vehicle (like a car or trailer)
- Exposed to excessive heat
- Out in prolonged sunlight
Simply - if you wouldn’t leave your dog there, don’t leave your Pads there.
